Amid Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, Germany and the UK have solidified their partnership in a key field of future technology.
The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the British National Physical Laboratory (NPL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to significantly expand their cooperation in the field of quantum technologies. The shared goal is to position Europe at the global forefront of the quantum industry through unified measurement standards and joint research.
PTB President Prof. Dr. Cornelia Denz and NPL CEO Dr. Peter Thompson emphasized the critical need for robust metrological frameworks to successfully transition quantum computing, communication, and sensing into industrial applications. Nicolas Spethmann, Head of the Quantum Technology Competence Center at PTB, highlighted that reliable standards are indispensable at this stage—just prior to broad market adoption.
This alliance underscores the vital role of metrology as an enabler for the commercial success of European quantum technologies.
